Sprains are injuries that affect ligaments which are thick bands of cartilage that attach bone to bone. Sprains occur in response to a stretch or tear of a ligament, such as a fall or outside force that displaces the surrounding joint from its normal alignment. Sprains can range from a mid ligament stretch to a complete tear. Bruising, swelling, instability, and painful movement are common symptoms of experienced after a sprain occurs. (Ankles, Knees, Wrists and Shoulder Muscles)
Strains, also sometimes called muscle pulls, are injuries that affect muscles or tendons which are thick bands that attach muscles to bones. Strains occur in response to over stretching or over contraction, or a quick tear, twist, or pull of the muscle. Pain, weakness, and muscle spasms are common symptoms experienced after a strain occurs. (Hamstrings, Calves, Quadriceps and Back Muscles)

Treatment Protocol

Important Treatment Protocol Immediately After Injury

Steps you can take that have proven to promote effective healing.

R.I.C.E. Therapy - of both sprains and strains is important for a timely recovery immediately after an injury, and often prior to obtaining a sports medicine therapeutic product, which can then be integrated into the therapy. Consultation with a Medical professional is strongly recommended.
Rest - The first 24-48 hours after the injury is considered a critical treatment period and activities need to be curtailed.
Ice - For the first 48 hours post-injury, ice pack and elevate the injured area, 15 minutes at a time every 3-4 hours in order to reduce swelling of blood vessels and reducing pain.

Treatment Protocol cont.

Compression - Use compression to help reduce swelling when elevating the injured joint or muscle. The compression wrap should be snug, but not cutting off circulation. Shock Doctor Sports Medicine products can help provide this compression.
Elevate - Keep your injured joint or muscle higher than your heart as often as possible.
